Wike Declares South-South Region as PDP's Strongest Zone

The political landscape in Nigeria remains as dynamic as ever, with the South-South region continuing to be a stronghold for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This assertion was reaffirmed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, during a disputed zonal congress held in Calabar, Cross River State. Addressing party delegates, Wike emphasized the resilience of the PDP in the region and dismissed controversies surrounding the congress.

During his speech, Wike reminded attendees that the South-South has historically been the bedrock of the PDP. He refuted claims that congresses require full attendance, urging members to focus on electing leaders who will strengthen the party rather than be distracted by external influences.

“The South-South Zone remains the strongest pillar of the PDP in Nigeria. It has always been and will continue to be,” Wike declared. “There is no constitutional provision stating that a congress should be postponed due to personal engagements of some members.”

His remarks seemed to be directed at those who sought to challenge the legitimacy of the congress, as he maintained that the zonal body, not the National Working Committee (NWC), holds the authority to conduct such proceedings.

Amid tensions over the congress’s validity, Wike insisted that the process was in line with party protocols. He dismissed concerns about attendance, asserting that no congress has ever had a complete presence of delegates and that the gathering in Calabar was legitimate.

“This is the final zonal congress of the South-South Zone. After today’s election, no other zonal congress will take place,” he assured the delegates.

The former Rivers State governor also expressed confidence in the region’s ability to resist external interference, declaring that attempts to intimidate him or disrupt the congress would fail.

“This is our domain, and we are not newcomers to the game. We must remain united and elect leaders committed to the party’s success. Only through unity and honesty can we sustain our strength,” he added.

Speaking at the event, the PDP South-South Zonal Chairman, Dan Orbih, acknowledged that internal conflicts had plagued the party in the region. He described the congress as an opportunity to reset and rebuild for a stronger future.

“The issues we face within the party are self-inflicted, and we must take responsibility for addressing them. This congress serves as a platform for us to restructure and initiate the process of rebuilding,” Orbih stated.

His remarks highlighted ongoing divisions within the party, suggesting that the congress could serve as a turning point for reconciliation and progress.

Despite the event proceeding as planned, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) distanced itself from the congress. In an official statement, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, declared that no recognized South-South Zonal Congress had taken place.

The statement urged party members to disregard claims regarding the congress’s legitimacy, further complicating the already contentious political atmosphere. This stance by the NWC has raised questions about possible rifts within the PDP and whether the leadership can maintain cohesion ahead of future elections.

The PDP has historically enjoyed a strong presence in the South-South, a region known for its strategic political importance. However, internal disagreements and power struggles could pose a threat to its continued dominance. Wike’s strong statements and the NWC’s contradictory position suggest an underlying battle for control within the party.

As the PDP navigates these internal tensions, its ability to maintain unity will be critical in the lead-up to national elections. The outcome of the disputed congress in Calabar and the party’s response in the coming weeks will likely shape its trajectory in the region and beyond.

For now, the South-South remains a battleground for influence within the PDP, and only time will tell whether the party can resolve its internal conflicts and maintain its stronghold in Nigeria’s political landscape.

The South-South’s political alignment is not just crucial for the PDP but for the entire national political scene. The region has historically influenced presidential elections, given its significant voter base and economic contributions, especially in the oil sector. If the PDP fails to manage internal rifts effectively, it may find itself vulnerable to opposition parties looking to make inroads in the region. This could have ripple effects on the party’s overall performance in upcoming elections.

Observers note that political stability within the PDP in the South-South is essential for maintaining its competitive edge. Should the party present a fragmented front, it could lose key supporters and even influential stakeholders who may feel alienated by ongoing internal conflicts.

Political analysts suggest that the PDP leadership must work swiftly to reconcile differences and bring all factions together under a unified strategy. The upcoming months will be crucial in determining whether the party can mend fences or if further fragmentation will weaken its prospects.

Efforts to engage key stakeholders, including governors, former governors, and influential political figures, will be necessary to reinforce the party’s foundation in the South-South. Without a cohesive approach, the PDP risks losing ground to political rivals who may capitalize on internal weaknesses.

Ultimately, the ongoing crisis serves as both a challenge and an opportunity for the PDP. How it chooses to address these issues will determine whether it remains the dominant force in the South-South or faces the possibility of losing its stronghold. Only time will reveal the long-term impact of these political maneuvers.
