James Kabingu Muregi’s political career spanned decades, beginning in 1969 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Nyandarua South. He held the seat for ten years and later served as the Deputy Speaker of Parliament during a politically turbulent period.
A staunch government supporter, Muregi aligned himself with the ruling administration and was a key figure in the Gikuyu, Embu, and Meru Association (GEMA), a powerful regional political movement during President Jomo Kenyatta’s tenure. His tenure saw him rise to the position of Assistant Minister for Environment in 1989 and later Minister for Livestock Development in the early 1990s. However, his political fortunes dwindled after losing his parliamentary seat in 1992, following Kenya’s transition to a multi-party system.
Despite efforts to maintain influence within the Kenya African National Union (KANU), internal rivalries and shifting political dynamics sidelined him. By 1995, his political influence had faded, and he gradually stepped away from public office.
After exiting politics, Muregi took a different path, embracing a spiritual journey. He transitioned from a political strategist to a preacher and now leads a church in Nyandarua.
