The Mobile World Congress 2025, currently underway in Barcelona, has provided a significant platform for global leaders and industry players to engage in discussions aimed at shaping the future of technology and telecommunications. On the sidelines of this prestigious event, a high-level delegation from Ghana’s Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, led by a key government official, met with the Group CEO of MTN, Ralph Mupita, and the Group Senior Vice President, Eben Asante, to deliberate on critical areas of collaboration. The engagement was centered on enhancing the quality of service within MTN’s Ghana operations and improving the overall customer experience for Ghanaians.

A major highlight of the discussions was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry and MTN Ghana to support the implementation of the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP). This flagship initiative, spearheaded by the Ghanaian government under the leadership of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, aims to equip one million Ghanaians with essential digital skills. The programme represents a strategic partnership between the government and private sector entities, ensuring that Ghana’s workforce is well-prepared to thrive in the digital economy.

The One Million Coders Programme is expected to be a game-changer in Ghana’s digital transformation agenda. As the world increasingly shifts towards digitalisation, coding and programming have become vital skills for economic growth and job creation. This initiative is designed to bridge the digital skills gap by providing training in areas such as software development, artificial intelligence, data science, and cybersecurity. By collaborating with industry players like MTN, the programme will leverage expertise, infrastructure, and resources to ensure effective training delivery across the country.

The upcoming official launch of the OMCP by President Mahama will mark a significant milestone in Ghana’s commitment to digital literacy and technological advancement. In line with the government’s 120-day social contract, the programme underscores a strong dedication to empowering the youth and workforce with relevant skills for the modern digital economy. As Ghana continues to position itself as a technology hub in Africa, investments in digital education will not only boost employment opportunities but also enhance the nation’s competitiveness on the global stage.

This collaboration between the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation and MTN Ghana signals a renewed commitment to public-private partnerships in driving national development. With a growing demand for digital solutions and innovation, equipping citizens with the necessary skills will not only improve individual livelihoods but also contribute to economic growth and technological advancement. The success of the OMCP will be instrumental in fostering a digitally empowered generation, capable of contributing meaningfully to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
