Students, backpackers, and budget travelers frequently find refuge in hostels. But sometimes, these temporary stays become the setting for eerie, spine-chilling experiences. Here are four real-life hostel horror stories that will make you think twice before booking your next stay.

1. The Room with No Reflection

Sarah, who loves to travel, stayed in an old hostel in Edinburgh. There was something off about the place, though. She noticed strange things the first night because her room had an antique mirror that was mounted on the wall. She would wake up to an icy draft, even though the windows were sealed. One night, she stood in front of the mirror brushing her hair when she noticed something terrifying—her reflection lagged behind her real movements. Frozen with fear, she tested it again. When she raised her hand, her reflection remained motionless for a few seconds before suddenly catching up.

Panicked, she turned away, only to hear a whispering sound. She ran out and reported it to the receptionist, who went pale. “That room… we don’t usually assign it to guests,” he admitted.

A local historian later revealed that the hostel was once a Victorian mansion and that a woman had died in the very room where Sarah demanded to change rooms. Some say her spirit remained trapped inside the mirror.

2. The Midnight Visitor

Liam, a backpacker from Canada, was staying in a hostel in Bangkok. It was cheap and lively, but on his second night, something disturbing happened.

At around 2 a.m., he woke up to the sensation of someone standing over his bed. Expecting it to be another traveler returning late, he squinted in the dark. He saw a shadowy figure looming near his bunk. The figure didn't move, and the room was silent. “Hey, man, you okay?” Liam whispered.

No response. He turned over, thinking it was just his imagination. But then he felt a weight pressing down on his chest. He tried to scream but couldn’t move—a classic case of sleep paralysis. Liam could make out long, tangled hair and hollow eyes staring at him as the shadowy figure drew closer. Just as suddenly as it had appeared, the weight lifted. He gasped for air and bolted upright. The figure was gone. His roommates were fast asleep.

When he told the hostel staff the following morning, they were not surprised. “You saw her, didn’t you?” They spoke glumly. Apparently, multiple guests had reported seeing a ghostly woman in that room. She may have been a former guest who had mysteriously passed away there many years ago. 3. The Bloodstained Floor

Marta, a student on a European tour, stayed at a hostel in Prague that was once a 19th-century hospital. On her first night, she felt uneasy in her dorm, but she brushed it off.

At around midnight, she woke up feeling thirsty. As she got out of bed, she noticed something strange—the wooden floor near her bed seemed damp. She gasped when she turned on the flashlight on her phone. There was a dark red stain spreading across the floorboards. It looked like blood.

Her heart pounded. She reached down, but her fingers became dry when she touched it. Confused and terrified, she grabbed her things and fled to the common area.

In the morning, she asked the staff about the stain. They looked at each other before one of them admitted, “That used to be the old surgery room when this was a hospital. Patients died there all the time.”

She walked out right away. 4. The Man Who Stole My Bed David, a solo traveler, arrived at a cheap hostel in Mexico City. Except for one other guest in the bunk above his, the dorm was mostly empty. Late at night, David woke up to the sound of shuffling beneath his bed. He ignored it because he thought his roommate was getting up. However, the sound persisted, with slow, deliberate movements. Annoyed, he groggily leaned over and whispered, “Can you keep it down?”

No response.

Then, his roommate—who was in the top bunk—groaned and sat up. “What are you talking about?”

David’s blood ran cold. If his roommate was above him… who was under the bed?

Without hesitation, they both jumped up and turned on the light. There was no one there. The door was locked from the inside.

They stayed awake the rest of the night, too scared to sleep. When they told the receptionist in the morning, she admitted that there had been reports of a strange presence in that room—some guests even claimed to have seen a man crawling out from under the bed before disappearing into thin air.

These hostel horror stories remind us that even the most ordinary places can hold dark secrets. Would you dare to stay in one of these haunted hostels?
