Dreams FC Coach Zito Refutes Allegations of GFA Interference
Dreams FC head coach, Abdul Karim Zito, has spoken out in defense of Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Simeon-Okraku, dismissing accusations that he meddles in national team selections. In an interview with Graphic Sports, Zito, who also serves as Ghana’s U-19 head coach, firmly denied claims that Okraku influences player call-ups. According to him, the GFA president is often unaware of which players are selected, emphasizing that the decision-making process is left entirely to the coaching staff. Zito recalled a specific interaction after his team secured qualification for the AFCON tournament, during which Okraku only inquired about the team’s progress rather than dictating squad selections.
Zito further clarified that Okraku's involvement in team selection is minimal, primarily limited to encouraging scouting efforts rather than making direct recommendations. He shared that following Okraku’s encouragement, he considered adding three foreign-based players to his squad. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the players could not participate. This, he argued, is proof that the GFA president does not exert undue influence over national team rosters. Zito insisted that coaches retain full autonomy over their squad decisions, and any speculation suggesting otherwise is baseless.
The debate surrounding Okraku’s alleged interference has been a topic of concern among Ghanaian football enthusiasts, with critics questioning the integrity of the selection process. However, Zito’s statements aim to put these doubts to rest, reinforcing the notion that team selection is based purely on merit and coaching decisions. His remarks come at a crucial time when the GFA faces scrutiny over various governance issues. As the discussion continues, Zito’s firm stance provides a counter-narrative to the accusations, reaffirming confidence in the leadership of the GFA president.
