Asante Kotoko Bans Asempa FM Over Insensitive Reaction On Fan's Death
A recent report by Ghanaweb reveals that Professor E.K. Wallace, a well-known sports presenter on Asempa FM, has stirred controversy with his comments regarding the tragic death of Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley. Wallace’s remarks have drawn sharp criticism from Lawyer Maurice Ampaw and Asante Kotoko Sporting Club, with both threatening legal action and imposing a ban on the radio station.
During his show (Mmra Ne Abrabo Mu Nsem) on Wontumi TV, Wallace claimed that Pooley’s death was unrelated to events at the stadium. Instead, he suggested that the incident occurred during a confrontation outside the match venue, involving a group referred to as the “ghetto boys” in Nsuatre. Wallace denied any connection between the tragedy and stadium security or matchday activities.
These comments have sparked outrage, particularly from Lawyer Maurice Ampaw, a private legal practitioner and human rights advocate. Ampaw accused Wallace of spreading false information that contradicts the ongoing police investigation into Pooley’s death. He argued that Wallace’s statements were not only misleading but also deeply hurtful to the bereaved family.
“Your comments are an insult and are causing further pain to the family. Asempa FM, you have one week to retract this statement,” Ampaw stated during his appearance on the program.
Ampaw further warned that failure to retract the statement could result in legal action, including a lawsuit and charges of contempt of court.
In light of the controversy, Asante Kotoko SC has banned Asempa FM from covering any of the club’s events. This decision reflects the club’s dissatisfaction with Wallace’s remarks and underscores its commitment to ensuring that sensitive matters, especially those involving fan tragedies, are handled with accuracy and respect.
The incident has ignited a broader conversation about responsible journalism and the need for sensitivity when reporting on such delicate issues.
