Speaker Bagbin Demands Apology From MP Over 'Daughter Of A Murderer' Comment
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has called on the Member of Parliament (MP) who made the controversial “daughter of a murderer” remark during a parliamentary session last month to come forward and apologize before the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, February 4, when a voice was heard saying, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down,” seemingly directed at Dr. Zanetor Rawlings while Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin was speaking. The comment has sparked widespread outrage and speculation about the identity of the MP responsible, though those accused have denied involvement.
Several groups, including Anlo chiefs and residents of Klottey Korle, have petitioned Speaker Bagbin to reveal the MP’s identity, arguing that the statement dishonors the memory of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.
On Tuesday, the Volta Diaspora Caucus organized a protest and submitted a petition to Parliament, demanding an apology from the MP in question. While receiving the petition, Speaker Bagbin revealed that significant progress has been made in the investigation and urged the responsible individual to take accountability.
The Speaker emphasized that if found guilty of defamation, the MP could face severe consequences, including reprimand, suspension for up to nine months, or even expulsion from Parliament. This underscores the gravity of the offense and Bagbin’s commitment to maintaining decorum and respect within the legislative chamber.
The incident has reignited discussions about the need for professionalism and accountability among Ghana’s lawmakers.
