Liverpool faces Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16, with the first leg at the Parc des Princes bringing together the Premier League's runaway leaders and the form club in Europe at the moment. Arne Slot does not seem to compare himself to Liverpool heroes.
He isn't one to get carried away with their season thus far.
So it was unsurprising that he almost totally ignored a question about how he could follow in the footsteps of Liverpool legend Joe Fagan and lead the Reds to league, European Cup, and League Cup victory in his debut season. He has no interest in thinking his Reds squad are now the finest team in Europe only because of their spectacular season thus far.
The goal is to advance from the last-16 against an in-form PSG side over two legs, rather than to be immortalised like Fagan, who, like Slot after Jurgen Klopp, succeeded Bob Paisley. However, it is difficult to shake the sensation that something exceptional is happening with Liverpool this season.
They currently lead the Premier League by 13 points and are in the Carabao Cup final. They also topped Europe's overhauled league system. On the eve of the first leg at the Parc des Princess, PSG manager Luis Enrique referred to them as the best side in Europe.
However, Slot believes they cannot be regarded the finest squad on the continent unless they win the trophy in May.
"It's a nice compliment to get, but the best team in Europe has to win the Champions League," Slot remarked. "But we are a long way from that, starting with a difficult game against PSG and then all of the difficult ones that will follow because we saw the draw.
"I believe Real Madrid is still the finest team in Europe right now, having won the competition last season. Someone else can say something else, but we have to win first."
