The return of former Deputy Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Gifty Oware-Mensah, has been hailed as a major breakthrough in the ongoing corruption investigation surrounding the NSS. Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has described her voluntary return as a significant development that spares the country the trouble of pursuing extradition.
Speaking on JoyNews' PM Express on Tuesday, March 3, Mr. Kpebu expressed relief over the former official’s return, highlighting concerns about the potential complications Ghanaian authorities would have faced if extradition proceedings had become necessary.
“It’s a big step forward in the investigation because until her return, I was wondering if we were going to do extradition,” he stated.
“At a point, we heard she was in the USA, so for her to have come back by herself, it’s a huge step forward. It’s saved us a lot of embarrassment, stress, and hassle of trying to get her back from wherever she was,” Mr. Kpebu added.
Ms. Oware-Mensah’s name has been linked to the alleged financial mismanagement at the NSS, an issue that has raised concerns among stakeholders. Her return, however, suggests a potential willingness to cooperate with investigators and possibly clear her name.
Mr. Kpebu pointed out that her decision to come back could indicate confidence in the legal process and a desire to set the record straight. “This is what we expect in governance and public service—accountability and due process,” he said.
The NSS corruption scandal has been a topic of national debate, with many calling for accountability and swift action against those found culpable. Ms. Oware-Mensah’s voluntary return has, therefore, been seen as a step in the right direction for transparency and justice.
As investigations continue, Ghanaians will be keenly watching how the case unfolds and whether other officials implicated in the scandal will also come forward to answer for their roles. The government has assured the public that due process will be followed and justice will be served in accordance with the law.
