Barcelona are expected to sign multiple defenders this summer, and their chances of signing one of them appear to have been handed a major boost in the last few weeks. This is the case with Jonathan Tah, who looks set to become the latest free agent signing made by the La Liga leaders. Tah has been on Barcelona's radar for the last 12 months.
They view him as an excellent low-cost signing for Hansi Flick's squad, which would be especially needed in the event of Andreas Christensen and/or Eric Garcia leaving at the end of the season, which is possible considering both players are out of contract in 2026. Tah's preference is reportedly Barcelona, and this is likely a factor in Bayern Munich dropping out of the race to sign the Bayer Leverkusen defender, as reported by Süddeutsche Zeitung (via Sport).
It has been decided by both Bayern's sporting department and Tah that the 27-year-old will not be moving to Bavaria when his Leverkusen contract expires at the end of the season. In theory, this should give Barcelona a relatively clear run to secure a pre-contract agreement, although complications have arisen on their end in recent days. Flick is in favor of adding his fellow German to the first-team squad at Barcelona, although that will only happen if a position opens up in the case of a departure.
At this point, it is far from certain that Christensen or Garcia will leave, despite the fact that both players would only have a year remaining on their current deals by the time the summer rolls around. A decision from Barcelona on Tah is not expected soon, with it being more likely towards the end of the season. At this stage, they could end up missing out if other clubs enter the race or Leverkusen manage to secure his stay.
