In Ghana, the safety of the President is entrusted to the President’s Own Guard Regiment (POGR), an elite military formation within the Ghana Armed Forces. The POGR is tasked with ensuring the President’s security during both public events and private activities, making sure that all potential threats are handled efficiently and precisely.

Composed of highly trained soldiers, the POGR is equipped with advanced weaponry, surveillance tools, and specialized training in areas like close protection, crisis management, and intelligence gathering. One of its key responsibilities is to provide physical protection for the President, whether he is attending public events, traveling abroad, or engaging in private activities.

The close protection team, which forms the core of the POGR, provides constant security to the President. This includes overseeing the President's motorcade, which consists of armored cars and decoy vehicles. The motorcade follows a carefully planned route with contingency escape options to ensure a rapid exit in case of any threat. During public events, the security detail is further strengthened by the positioning of snipers, undercover agents, and K9 units to monitor the surroundings and neutralize any potential danger.

The Commander of the Presidential Guard Regiment (CPGR), a high-ranking officer within the POGR, is responsible for overseeing all security protocols related to the President’s safety. The CPGR works in close coordination with the National Security Advisor and directly reports to the President to ensure the necessary security measures are always in place.

Special Operations Officers within the POGR play a crucial role in responding to emergencies, including counterterrorism and hostage rescue operations. These officers are specifically trained to handle high-risk situations and can neutralize a variety of threats, such as armed assailants or acts of terrorism. In the event of a threat, the President can be swiftly evacuated using armored vehicles and secure escape routes, ensuring his safety at all times.

When the President travels abroad, the POGR extends its security arrangements beyond Ghana’s borders. The regiment works with international agencies to maintain a seamless protection plan. Armed personnel may accompany the President, and armored vehicles are arranged for his security on foreign soil, ensuring that the level of protection remains consistent, even outside of Ghana.

The POGR’s collaboration with other national agencies, such as the Ghana Police, Armed Forces, and National Intelligence Bureau, allows for a coordinated and rapid response to any potential threat. Pre-arranged contingency plans are in place to guarantee that the President’s safety is never compromised. This includes a well-coordinated and rapid response in the event of an emergency.

President John Dramani Mahama, like his predecessors, benefits from the high level of protection provided by the POGR. His security team, led by the CPGR, ensures that his safety is maintained using modern methods such as real-time intelligence and quick-response strategies. This robust protection system is an essential aspect of Ghana’s national security infrastructure, allowing the President to focus on his duties without concerns for his personal safety. The POGR’s role is vital in maintaining both the physical security of the President and the stability of the nation.
