Inter Milan Secures 2-0 First-Leg Victory Over Feyenoord
Inter Milan took a significant step toward the Champions League quarterfinals by securing a 2-0 win against Feyenoord in the first leg of their last-16 tie. The Italian giants capitalized on their chances, with Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez scoring crucial goals in each half. Feyenoord, now managed by former striker Robin van Persie in just his second game in charge, started the match with energy and promise. Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Ibrahim Osman was particularly threatening, nearly giving the Dutch side an early lead, but Inter’s goalkeeper Josep Martinez made a crucial save at his near post. Despite Feyenoord's aggressive start, Inter remained disciplined and punished their opponents on the counterattack. In the 39th minute, Nicola Barella delivered a deep cross into the box, which Thuram met with a spectacular volley using the outside of his right foot, giving Inter the advantage before halftime.
The Italian side maintained their dominance after the break, doubling their lead just five minutes into the second half. Midfielder Piotr Zielinski set up Lautaro Martinez inside the box, and the Argentine forward displayed brilliant control, turning swiftly before firing a powerful shot into the top corner. That goal put Inter firmly in control of the tie, leaving Feyenoord with an uphill battle ahead of the second leg. The Dutch club, who previously pulled off a dramatic comeback against AC Milan in the play-off round, struggled to break down Inter’s well-organized defense. Their hopes of reducing the deficit suffered another blow when Inter’s defense remained compact and disciplined, preventing them from creating clear-cut chances. The Serie A leaders had a golden opportunity to extend their lead even further, but Zielinski’s penalty attempt was denied by a stunning save from Feyenoord’s goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther.
Inter now heads back to San Siro with a comfortable two-goal cushion, giving them a strong advantage ahead of next Tuesday’s return leg. Feyenoord, facing a monumental challenge, must find a way to produce another miraculous comeback if they hope to stay in the competition. Van Persie’s side will need to be more clinical in front of goal while ensuring their defense is better structured to handle Inter’s lethal attack. Meanwhile, Inter will look to finish the job at home, as they continue their push toward European glory. With the first leg behind them, Simone Inzaghi’s men will be confident of advancing, especially after displaying such efficiency and defensive solidity in Rotterdam. The Dutch club’s ability to turn things around remains uncertain, but given their history, they may still have some fight left in them. However, Inter’s experience and quality make them the clear favorites to progress to the next round.
