PRESIDENT MAHAMA SWEARS IN NEW MILITARY COMMANDERS, REINFORCES ARMED FORCES COUNCIL

Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama presided over the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed military service chiefs on Friday, officially inducting them as members of the Armed Forces Council. The event, held at the Ministry of Defence, marked a significant step in strengthening Ghana’s defense leadership ahead of crucial deliberations on promotions and military modernization.  

The newly sworn-in officers include:  

- Major General William Agyapong – Chief of Defence Staff (CDS)  

- Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu – Chief of Army Staff (COAS)  

- Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing – Chief of Naval Staff (CNS)  

- Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong – Chief of Air Staff (CAS)  

Each officer received their instrument of office from President Mahama, underscoring their pivotal roles in safeguarding national security. The ceremony also set the stage for an Armed Forces Council meeting, where key issues such as troop welfare, equipment upgrades, and strategic advancements were expected to be addressed.  


High-Level Attendance

The event drew prominent government officials, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Also in attendance were Secretary to the President Dr. Callistus Mahama and Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari, reflecting the administration’s commitment to cohesive defense governance.  

A New Chapter for Ghana’s Military

The appointments come at a critical time as Ghana continues to enhance its defense capabilities amid regional security challenges. The newly installed commanders bring extensive experience to their respective branches, with expectations high for their leadership in maintaining peace and operational readiness.  

President Mahama emphasized the importance of collaboration within the Armed Forces Council, urging the new leaders to prioritize innovation and efficiency in their tenure. As the military gears up for strategic reforms, the nation watches closely, anticipating strengthened security and continued stability under their command.  

This restructuring reaffirms Ghana’s dedication to a robust defense system, aligning with broader efforts to ensure national and regional security in an evolving geopolitical landscape.
