Chelsea Secure Advantage Over Copenhagen in Conference League Clash

Chelsea took a crucial step toward the quarter-finals of the Conference League with a narrow but important 2-1 victory over Copenhagen in the first leg of their last-16 tie. The match, held in Denmark, saw the Blues struggle to create chances in the first half, failing to register a single shot on target. However, the game turned in their favor immediately after halftime when Marc Cucurella, who replaced the injured Malo Gusto, initiated an attacking move down the left flank. The Spanish defender delivered a precise pass to captain Reece James, who unleashed a stunning low strike from 30 yards to give Chelsea the lead. Copenhagen responded strongly and came agonizingly close to leveling the score when Viktor Claesson's powerful effort struck the inside of the post before falling safely into the hands of Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

The Premier League side extended their advantage in the 65th minute through a well-worked goal. Cucurella was once again instrumental in the buildup, winning the ball near the left touchline before Christopher Nkunku found youngster Tyrique George. The talented winger showcased his composure by delivering a well-placed cut-back, which substitute Enzo Fernandez calmly slotted home to make it 2-0. Just when it seemed Chelsea would see out the match comfortably, Copenhagen found a way back into the contest. Gabriel Pereira rose high to meet Marcos Lopez’s deep free-kick, directing a powerful header past Sanchez to reduce the deficit. The Danish side's late goal ensured they remained in the tie, keeping their hopes alive for the return leg at Stamford Bridge.

With a one-goal advantage, Chelsea heads into the second leg with confidence but remains wary of the threat posed by their resilient opponents. The return fixture is scheduled for Thursday, March 13, at Stamford Bridge, where the Blues will look to finish the job and secure their place in the quarter-finals. The winner of the tie will face either Norwegian club Molde or Polish side Legia Warsaw in the next round. Chelsea’s performance, particularly in the second half, showcased their attacking prowess and ability to capitalize on key moments, but they will need to maintain their focus to prevent any surprises in the second leg. As the competition intensifies, Enzo Maresca’s squad will be aiming to build on this result and keep their European ambitions and live.
