Syria's New Leader Pledges Accountability Amidst Mass Killings of Alawite Civilians

Syria's President Ahmed al-Sharaa has vowed to hold accountable those responsible for the recent mass killings of Alawite civilians, which have left hundreds dead and many more displaced. The violence, which began on March 6, 2025, has primarily targeted Alawite communities in the coastal regions of Latakia and Tartus ¹.

According to reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), at least 973 civilians were killed in 39 separate massacres between March 6 and 8, 2025. The SOHR also reported that 190 civilians were killed by armed militias supporting the Syrian government between March 6 and 8.

The violence has been attributed to pro-Assad forces and extremist groups, who have been targeting Alawite communities in retaliation for their perceived support of the Syrian government. However, President al-Sharaa has denied any involvement of the Syrian government in the massacres, instead blaming "remnants of the former regime" for the violence.

In a speech addressing the Syrian people, President al-Sharaa condemned the attacks and vowed to bring those responsible to justice. He also urged pro-government fighters to "avoid any abuses" and to respect the rights of all civilians, regardless of their religious affiliation.

The Syrian government has established an independent committee to investigate the massacres and identify those responsible. The committee, which consists of seven judges, is tasked with submitting a comprehensive report to the president within 30 days.

The international community has widely condemned the massacres, with many countries calling for an immediate end to the violence. The United Nations has expressed its concern over the situation and has urged all parties to respect the rights of civilians and to refrain from committing human rights abuses.

The massacres have resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis, with thousands of civilians displaced and many more in need of assistance. The Syrian government has established several shelters to provide aid to those affected, but many civilians remain in need of assistance.

Turkey has also condemned the massacres, with many politicians and activists expressing their concern over the situation. The Turkish government has called for an immediate end to the violence and has urged the Syrian government to take steps to protect the rights of all civilians.

The co-chairs of Turkey's DEM Party, Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan, issued a statement criticizing the new Syrian administration's policies and condemning the massacres targeting Alawites in Latakia and Tartus.

The chairman of the Republican People's Party, Özgür Özel, also expressed his concern over the increasing violence against Alawites in Latakia and the surrounding areas, which has resulted in rising civilian casualties.

Protesters in Turkey have taken to the streets to condemn the massacres and to call for an end to the violence. Many have criticized the Turkish government for its support of the Syrian Armed Forces' actions against Alawites, which they say amounts to crimes against humanity.

Samandağ Mayor Emrah Karaçay said, "The massacres in Syria are moving toward genocide."

The protests in Turkey highlight the growing concern over the situation in Syria and the need for an immediate end to the violence.

The massacres of Alawite civilians in Syria are a grave concern for the international community. The Syrian government's pledge to hold those responsible accountable is a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to protect the rights of all civilians and to bring an end to the violence.

The international community must continue to pressure the Syrian government to take concrete steps to protect the rights of all civilians and to hold those responsible for the massacres accountable. Only through collective action can we hope to bring an end to the violence and to promote a lasting peace in Syria.
