Hearts of Oak Faces GFA Charges for Safety Regulation Violations
Accra Hearts of Oak has been charged by the Ghana Football Associationâs (GFA) Disciplinary Committee for breaching matchday safety regulations. The violation occurred during their recent Ghana Premier League match against Young Apostles, which ended in a 2-0 victory for Hearts at the University of Ghana Stadium. According to GFA prosecutors, the club permitted unaccredited individuals into the safe zone, allowing them to celebrate with the team. This act violated Article 8(e) of the GFA Enhanced Matchday Safety and Security Protocols, 2025, and Article 34(6)(d) of the GFA Ghana Premier League Regulations, 2019. The GFA described the breach as misconduct that could tarnish the integrity of the competition. Hearts of Oak has been given until March 11, 2025, to respond to the charges.
This incident occurred during the leagueâs return after a five-week suspension following the tragic stabbing of Francis Frimpong, also known as "Nana Pooley," during a violent clash between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko at Nana Kronmansah Park. Pooley was laid to rest on March 6 in Kumasi, prompting the GFA to implement stricter security measures. In response to growing safety concerns, the association introduced enhanced matchday security protocols and deployed regional safety officers from the Ghana Police Service to oversee security at various venues. These measures aim to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of players, officials, and spectators.
Despite the controversy, Hearts of Oak continues to lead the Ghana Premier League standings with 36 points. They currently hold a two-point advantage over their closest rivals, Asante Kotoko and Bibiani Gold Stars, who each have a game in hand. While the club faces disciplinary actions, their performance on the field remains strong as they push for the league title. However, their response to the GFAâs charges will determine whether they face further penalties, which could impact their season. With heightened security measures in place, clubs across the league will need to adhere to stricter regulations to maintain order and ensure the smooth running of the competition.
