Janet Nabla Urges Government to Introduce Fair Taxes That Won’t Burden Ghanaians
The Chairperson of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Asana Nabla, has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to implement a fair taxation system that does not place an excessive financial strain on the average Ghanaian. Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem ahead of the 2025 Budget presentation, she emphasized the importance of striking a balance between taxation and providing essential public services. While acknowledging that many Ghanaians are reluctant to pay taxes, she pointed out that they still expect good roads, quality education, and other basic amenities. She reminded the government that part of its electoral appeal was based on its stance on tax exemptions, and therefore, any new taxes should be carefully structured to prevent unnecessary hardship.
Nabla further explained that excessive taxation often leads to increased consumer prices, as many businesses transfer their tax burdens onto buyers. She highlighted that while producers may profit despite higher taxes, the real victims are everyday consumers who bear the cost through inflated prices. According to her, the focus should not be on introducing more taxes but on implementing policies that genuinely benefit the people. She argued that Ghana’s challenges are less about political affiliations and more about policies that work effectively. Her statement serves as a cautionary note to the government, urging them to consider the economic realities of citizens before rolling out new tax policies.
As the Finance Minister, Dr. Ato Forson, prepares to present the 2025 Budget and Policy Statement on March 11, many Ghanaians are eager to see if the government will take such concerns into account. Discussions on fiscal policies and national development remain a major focus, with other stakeholders also weighing in on issues such as the stalled Agenda 111 hospital projects and the impact of taxes on industries like betting. While some experts, like economist Bokpin, have urged the government to reconsider taxation policies to avoid overburdening citizens, others continue to advocate for reforms in different sectors. The upcoming budget will reveal whether the government is willing to adopt a more balanced tax structure that aligns with Nabla’s recommendations while ensuring national revenue generation.
