Virgil van Dijk's message to Darwin Nunez after missing Liverpool's penalty in the PSG shootout.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk had a simple message for Darwin Nunez and his team-mates after Liverpool's Champions League defeat via a penalty shootout against Paris Saint-Germain.
Virgil van Dijk has urged Darwin Nunez and his Liverpool teammates to be positive following their Champions League exit.
Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones' penalties were saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma at Anfield, allowing Desire Doue to advance Paris Saint-Germain to the competition's quarterfinals. Despite the Reds' stronger performance in the second leg, Ousmane Dembele's strike had brought the French back level.
But Van Dijk's focus is swiftly shifting to Liverpool's next opportunity for triumph. If they defeat Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final, Arne Slot will win his first trophy as manager.
Liverpool's captain wants his squad to have a great weekend by winning at Wembley Stadium to help them recover from their disappointment on Tuesday night.
"It's part of football," he said after the game. "I told the players, 'You can be unhappy because we are out of the competition, but chin up'. We're now preparing for the next challenge, which will be beautiful, during the weekend.
"I believe we were quite excellent today as well, and you want to go as far as possible, but we knew when we drew PSG it would be difficult. We saw in Paris when we struggled but won, and today we saw a very good Liverpool team, but we are out of the competition.
"When the draw informed us of the match between Liverpool and PSG. Both managers agreed that this was one of the best matches to witness in Europe. I think both teams were fantastic.
"It's not about consistency; you have to be outstanding in unique situations. We suffered greatly in Paris, but football is in that way. Unfair at times. Today we were fortunate; they hit the post several times. Gigi [Gianluigi Donnarumma] resembled Alisson in the first match. We are pleased and confident to go to the next level."
