Black Stars assistant coach Desmond Ofei has revealed that he is actively working with head coach Otto Addo to improve the performance of Ghana’s senior national team. The Black Stars, once dominant in African football, have struggled in recent years, experiencing early exits in back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments and failing to qualify for the 2025 edition in Morocco. Following this disappointing setback, Ofei was appointed to the technical team and has since collaborated closely with technical advisor Winfried Schaefer and Otto Addo to analyze the squad’s weaknesses and develop strategies for improvement. He stressed that the focus is on making significant progress both on and off the pitch, with targeted discussions on areas needing refinement.

Ofei highlighted the team’s commitment to bouncing back and reclaiming its place among Africa’s elite football nations. He explained that the coaching staff is working tirelessly behind the scenes to address the shortcomings that have hindered the Black Stars’ progress. The assistant coach acknowledged the importance of strategic planning and collaboration with experienced professionals to guide the team forward. A major goal is securing qualification for the FIFA World Cup, a challenge that requires disciplined preparation and tactical execution. Ofei expressed confidence in the determination of the coaching staff, emphasizing their hunger for success and their efforts to ensure the team is fully prepared for upcoming international competitions.

Beyond on-field improvements, Ofei also recognized the crucial role of fan support in the team’s resurgence. He pointed out that regaining the trust and enthusiasm of Ghanaian supporters is essential, and the only way to achieve that is through strong performances and consistent victories. He acknowledged that competition for qualification is intense, but the team must rise to the occasion when it matters most. Ofei’s prior success with Ghana’s U-20 team, leading them to an African Games triumph and securing U-20 AFCON qualification, has strengthened his belief in Ghana’s football potential. The Black Stars are set to regroup later this month as they prepare for crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, where they hope to turn their recent struggles into a fresh start.
