Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has been appointed as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of Ghana by President John Dramani Mahama, replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. His appointment, announced on March 13, 2025, follows constitutional procedures outlined in Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution, with consultation from the Council of State. With over 40 years in law enforcement, COP Yohuno has held numerous key positions, including Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Accra Regional Commander, and Director-General of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department. His tenure is expected to usher in significant modernization and reform efforts within the Ghana Police Service to enhance security and law enforcement effectiveness.
Throughout his career, COP Yohuno has been recognized for his commitment to public safety, crime prevention, and professional excellence. Starting as Accra Central Divisional Commander in 2007, he climbed the ranks to become Regional Commander in 2013 before assuming national leadership roles. In 2011, he was honored with the Grand Medal for his efforts in combating armed robbery and other criminal activities. His rapid rise in the service saw him promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police in 2012 and later to Commissioner of Police in 2016 under President Mahama’s administration. His diverse experience in operations, traffic management, and administration positions him well to lead the service in addressing contemporary security challenges.
COP Yohuno’s academic credentials also reflect his dedication to professional development. A former student of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, he later obtained a Bachelor's degree from the University of Ghana and an Executive MBA in Project Management from UPSA. As he assumes office, he faces the critical task of restoring public confidence in the police force, strengthening discipline within the service, and implementing reforms to improve operational efficiency. His leadership will be instrumental in tackling crime, enhancing police professionalism, and driving accountability within the force.
