Where Are Our Kusaug Women Leaders? Speak Up Against the Brutality on Our Sisters!

The silence from Kusaug women leaders on the recent brutal assault of women at the highways on 14th March 2025 is deafening. A disturbing video has been widely circulated on social media, showing some women—who had reportedly traveled from Kumasi to pick up their goods—being beaten by our own Kusasi brothers. This is unacceptable, and it is time for our women leaders to break their silence and condemn this heinous act.

Women of Kusaug cannot pick and choose when to speak. We have marched, demonstrated, and protested when women’s rights were trampled on in other instances. Why then are we quiet when our own sisters are being brutalized? Is it because this time, the perpetrators are from our own ethnic group? If we turn a blind eye to this injustice, posterity will judge us harshly. Tomorrow, it could be any of us facing the same fate, and if we fail to act now, no one will be there to speak for us when our time comes.

Silence in times of injustice is complicity. We should not behave like certain so-called journalists who conveniently choose to report on select incidents while ignoring others. Some, like Simon Asimiga, can loudly cover issues in Gambaga yet fail to report on the killings in Gumyoko, where six people have lost their lives in the Binduri District. Such hypocrisy will not go unnoticed. The Mamprusis may soon have their own response to Simon’s biased reporting, but that is another issue altogether.

What matters now is the safety and dignity of our women. The Kusaug Women's movement must not be silent. If we fail to condemn violence against women today, we lose the moral right to speak on women’s issues in the future. Hypocrisy weakens our cause and emboldens those who wish to harm us. If we allow this brutality to go unchallenged, we send a dangerous message that women’s lives do not matter, and that others can harm us with impunity.

Women Must Defend Women!

Our history as Kusaug women is built on resilience, strength, and unity. We are mothers, sisters, and daughters who have always stood firm against injustice. The brutalization of women, regardless of the perpetrators or the circumstances, should never be tolerated. It is disappointing to see that our women leaders, who should be the first to speak against this violence, are nowhere to be found. Their silence is a betrayal of the very principles they claim to uphold.

This is not about politics, ethnicity, or conflict—it is about the dignity and safety of women. If we refuse to speak out today, we are setting a dangerous precedent. When women are attacked simply for going about their daily business, it means no woman is safe. And if we allow this to continue, we open the door for more violence, not just against women but against anyone seen as vulnerable.

The Kusaug Women’s movement must take a stand, not as supporters of one side in a conflict, but as champions of peace, justice, and reconciliation. We should be at the forefront of condemning any form of violence, regardless of who commits it. If we only speak when it is convenient, we lose credibility and become part of the problem.

To Our Leaders—Where Are You?

We must ask ourselves: Why are our women leaders not speaking? Are they afraid? Are they compromised? Or do they simply not care? If we are truly committed to the well-being of all women, we must rise above personal and political interests and do what is right.

The time to act is now. We demand that Kusaug women leaders:

  1. Publicly Condemn the Attack – Issue statements condemning the brutalization of these women and call for justice.
  2. Advocate for Justice – Ensure that those responsible are held accountable. Violence against women must never be normalized.
  3. Support the Victims – These women need medical, legal, and psychological support. We must stand by them in their time of need.
  4. Promote Peace – Women have always played a crucial role in peacebuilding. Let us not be seen as supporters of violence but as ambassadors of unity.

If we fail to take action now, we will be remembered as hypocrites who stood by while our own sisters suffered. If we continue to be silent, we will be the stupidest group of people, allowing women to be attacked simply because we refuse to challenge those responsible.

Enough is enough! We must not allow women to be used as pawns in any conflict. Our duty is to protect and uplift one another, not to remain silent when we are being violated. Let us not betray the very essence of our struggle for women’s rights and dignity.

To our women leaders—where are you? Why are you silent? Speak now before it is too late. If you refuse to act today, remember that tomorrow, it could be you.
