Argentina Reduces Ministries Under President Javier Milei’s Leadership

Argentina's newly elected president, Javier Milei, has taken swift action to implement his economic reforms, including a drastic reduction in the number of government ministries. On Sunday, during a closed-door ceremony at Casa Rosada, he officially swore in his cabinet, which consists of only nine ministers—half the number under the previous administration. This move aligns with Milei’s “Chainsaw Plan,” a campaign promise aimed at reducing government spending and streamlining bureaucracy. Initially, the plan proposed merging the Health Ministry into a newly created “Human Capital” Ministry, but it was later retained as an independent entity. The restructuring reflects Milei’s commitment to bold economic changes, with significant implications for Argentina’s governance and fiscal policy.

Among those appointed were key figures such as Nicolás Posse as Chief of Staff, Luis Caputo as Economy Minister, and Patricia Bullrich, who returned to her former role as Security Minister. Other appointees include Luis Petri for Defense, Guillermo Francos for Interior, and Mario Russo for Health. The restructured government also introduced the Human Capital Ministry, led by Sandra Petovello, which now oversees education and labor. Meanwhile, the Infrastructure Ministry, under Guillermo Ferraro, is expected to handle Argentina’s public works and development projects. The administration also appointed Diana Mondino as Foreign Minister and Mariano Cúneo Libarona as Justice Minister. By law, the government must submit its restructuring decree to Congress for review within ten days, where both legislative chambers will determine its validity.

Following the swearing-in ceremony, President Milei addressed his supporters from the balcony of Casa Rosada, delivering a passionate speech in which he reaffirmed his commitment to economic reform. Amidst chants from the crowd and the waving of Argentine flags, Milei warned of difficult days ahead but insisted that his policies were necessary for the country’s long-term prosperity. Some supporters held yellow Gadsden flags with the phrase "Don't tread on me," a symbol associated with libertarianism and limited government. As part of the inauguration events, Milei attended an interfaith service at Buenos Aires Cathedral before concluding the day with a gala at Teatro Colón. With his cabinet now in place, Milei is set to push forward with his aggressive economic policies, promising a transformative shift in Argentina’s political and financial landscape.
