Andre Ayew Unbothered by Black Stars Omission

Former Ghanaian international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has disclosed that Andre Ayew remains unfazed despite being left out of Ghana’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Ayew, a highly experienced player with over 120 caps and 24 goals for the Black Stars, has not featured for the national team since their disappointing group-stage exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast. Despite his recent performances for French Ligue 1 side Le Havre, where he has netted five goals this season, the forward was once again overlooked in the squad selection.

Ayew’s omission has raised questions, especially considering his leadership and experience. Many expected his inclusion, given his strong club performances and ability to influence games. However, Ghana’s head coach Otto Addo has opted for a younger squad, seemingly prioritizing fresh talent over experience. This move aligns with the team’s rebuilding process after recent underwhelming performances in major tournaments. While Ayew’s absence is notable, Agyemang-Badu stressed that the decision ultimately lies with the coach, and his selection criteria should be respected.

Reacting to the exclusion, Agyemang-Badu emphasized that player selection is based on performance and team dynamics. He acknowledged Ayew’s contributions but insisted that Otto Addo’s decision must be honored. “We all know that the criteria for selecting players into the Black Stars is performance. Andre Ayew is performing, but if the coach has made a decision, we need to respect it,” he stated. He further assured fans that Ayew is not troubled by the situation, revealing that he had personally spoken to the player. “I have spoken to Andre Ayew, and he is not worried,” Agyemang-Badu added, highlighting the veteran’s professionalism and mental strength.

Ayew’s absence may allow younger players to step up and prove themselves on the international stage. Ghana’s squad features several emerging talents who have been instrumental in their respective clubs. The national team is undergoing a transition, and while Ayew’s experience would have been valuable, the coaching staff appears focused on building a squad capable of long-term success. Some fans and analysts believe Ayew still has a role to play in the Black Stars, while others see his omission as a necessary step towards rejuvenating the team.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars have officially commenced their training camp in Accra ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Key players such as Mohammed Kudus, Kamaldeen Sulemana, Jojo Wollacott, Antoine Semenyo, and Thomas Partey have all reported for training. The team is set to face Chad on Friday, March 21, at the Accra Sports Stadium before traveling to Morocco to take on Madagascar on Monday, March 24. With Ghana currently sitting second in Group I with nine points—level with leaders Comoros—these matches are crucial in their qualification campaign. A strong performance in these fixtures could solidify their position at the top of the group, bringing them closer to securing a World Cup spot.

Despite the controversy surrounding Ayew’s omission, Ghana’s focus remains on preparing for these crucial matches. The team’s recent performances have been inconsistent, and fans are eager to see an improved display. Otto Addo and his coaching staff are under pressure to deliver positive results, and every decision—including squad selection—will be closely scrutinized. Whether Ayew makes a return in future games remains uncertain, but for now, the Black Stars must concentrate on their immediate challenges.

As the qualifiers approach, Ghanaian football supporters remain divided on Ayew’s exclusion. While some back the coach’s decision to prioritize younger talents, others argue that experience is vital in high-stakes matches. Regardless of differing opinions, all eyes will be on the Black Stars as they seek to prove themselves on the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
