Ghana Shines at the Independence Armwrestling Challenge
The recently concluded Independence Armwrestling Challenge, held at the Center Point Mall in Accra, brought together top athletes from Ghana, Benin, Nigeria, and Togo. Organized by the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) to mark Ghana’s independence, the event showcased intense competition and high-level performances. Among the highlights was Ghana’s dominance in several weight categories, including the female +80kg division, where Grace Minta clinched the gold medal after outperforming competitors from across West Africa. Florence Boakye and Afia Kumah secured silver and bronze, respectively, ensuring a Ghanaian clean sweep in that category. The men’s division also saw remarkable victories, with Wisdom Abromekyi winning gold in the 65kg category, while Daniel Acquah and Benin Amoono Stephen took silver and bronze. Meanwhile, rising star Joshua Yeboah made a name for himself by securing gold in the 90kg men’s category, defeating experienced competitors from multiple nations.
The event attracted several dignitaries, including Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, who expressed his excitement over the competitive spirit displayed. Other notable attendees included the Vice President of GAF, Dr. Kofi Addo Agyekum, Hon. Joseph Cudjoe, and Hon. Dickson Kyere Duah, along with representatives from the Ghana Olympic Committee, the National Sports Authority, and various sports federations. The President of Ghana Armwrestling, Charles Osei Asibey, praised the success of the championship, attributing it to the dedication of athletes, coaches, and organizers. He emphasized that the growth of armwrestling in Ghana and Africa reflects the increasing recognition of the sport and its potential to produce world-class athletes. Asibey also lauded the collaborative efforts of GAF and its partners in hosting an international-standard competition that brought together some of the best talents in African armwrestling.
Beyond the championship, the event served as a platform for talent development and sports promotion in Ghana. The Ghana Armwrestling Federation reaffirmed its commitment to expanding the sport by identifying and nurturing future champions. Officials announced plans for the upcoming Kids Armwrestling event, designed to introduce younger athletes to the sport and encourage grassroots participation. With continuous support from stakeholders, armwrestling in Ghana is expected to reach new heights, paving the way for athletes to compete at international levels.
