Monique Mawulawe Agbedekpui, who won the Miss Ghana crown in 2020, has opened up about not receiving many of the material rewards and financial incentives traditionally associated with the prestigious pageant. According to her, the timing of her reign, which coincided with the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, significantly impacted the fulfillment of these expectations.
Despite the setbacks, Monique acknowledged that holding the
Miss Ghana title came with its own advantages. The crown provided her with
recognition, influence, and valuable connections that have benefited her
personal projects and advocacy efforts. “It came with a title, which helped me
and got me influence through people I needed and all that. But it didn’t come
with the physical things like the car, cash prizes, and other goodies,” she
added.
While the absence of certain rewards was disappointing, Monique expressed understanding of the situation, recognizing that the Miss Ghana brand did its best under the circumstances. Rather than focusing on the material benefits she missed out on, she remains grateful for the platform and the opportunities it provided.
Monique’s story serves as a reminder of the realities faced by pageant winners, especially during unprecedented times.
