Cape Coast Stadium to Undergo Renovation, Reserved for Black Stars Matches
Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has revealed plans to renovate the Cape Coast Sports Stadium and designate it exclusively for Black Stars matches. This decision follows a directive from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which barred the stadium from hosting top-tier matches due to its current state. Previously, the venue was a key location for Ghana’s national team, particularly during the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, Adams stated that Cape Coast Stadium requires minimal refurbishment compared to other stadiums, making it the ideal facility to upgrade quickly. He emphasized that no club teams will be permitted to use the stadium in the near future, as it will be reserved solely for the national team’s home matches. The renovation project is scheduled for completion before Ghana’s next round of 2026 World Cup qualifying matches, which will take place in September and October. Adams further mentioned that once Cape Coast Stadium is fully refurbished, the government will shift its focus to upgrading Accra and Kumasi stadiums, ensuring that Ghana has multiple high-quality venues for international competitions. With Baba Yara Stadium already banned from hosting international games by both CAF and FIFA, Ghana has been forced to relocate its upcoming World Cup qualifiers to the Accra Sports Stadium.
