Pita Highlights Differences in Gospel Music Support Between Ghana and Nigeria
Nigerian gospel singer Pita has praised Ghana’s strong support for gospel music while highlighting the challenges faced by gospel artistes in Nigeria. In an interview with Doreen Avio on Daybreak Hitz, he noted that corporate sponsorship for gospel events in Nigeria is limited due to the perception that the country is a secular nation. “That’s one of the things I love about Ghana. Ghana is a country that really supports the gospel. In Nigeria, it’s a little bit different to get corporate sponsorship for gospel stuff,” he explained. He acknowledged that in Ghana, brands are more willing to sponsor gospel events, making it easier for gospel musicians to thrive.
Pita also discussed the difference in airplay for Christian music between the two countries. He observed that Ghanaian radio stations play gospel music throughout the day, while in Nigeria, it is mostly limited to Sundays or early morning hours. “You guys play Christian music throughout the day, but in Nigeria, you wait for Sunday,” he pointed out. He added that some Nigerian radio stations quickly shift to secular music after a brief gospel segment, making it difficult for gospel artistes to gain consistent exposure. Additionally, he emphasized the need for better structures within the gospel music industry, urging gospel artistes and Christian creatives to invest in organizing their work professionally.
Beyond music, Pita also shared his admiration for Ghanaian culture, describing Ghanaians as polite, well-mannered, and deeply cultured people. However, he humorously noted that Ghana has become quite expensive. His visit to Ghana was marked by The Gratitude Concert, which he hosted at the Keepers House Chapel in Accra on March 16, 2025. His experiences in the country have strengthened his appreciation for Ghana’s gospel music scene, and he hopes for more growth and support for gospel artistes across Africa.
