Sarah Adwoa Safo, the former Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, has thrown her full support behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, urging the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to give the ex-Vice President another shot at leading the party into the 2028 general election. Despite steering the NPP to a loss in the 2024 polls, Safo believes Bawumia remains a strong contender deserving of a second opportunity.

In a candid interview on Asempa FM, as reported by GhanaWeb, the seasoned lawyer and past Dome-Kwabenya MP passionately defended her stance. She drew on historical examples to bolster her argument, pointing out that success in politics often comes after initial setbacks. “Everyone deserves a chance to try again,” Safo asserted. “Take Nana Akufo-Addo—he clinched the presidency on his third run. Critics wrote him off, claiming he’d never lead Ghana, yet divine timing proved them wrong. So why should we judge Dr. Bawumia after just one go? Even Prof. Mills didn’t win his first try. I lost my initial primary too, but triumphed the second time around.”

Safo’s confidence in Bawumia hinges on his potential to rally the party and secure victory in 2028, a view shared by some NPP loyalists who see the former vice president’s polished reputation as a winning asset. With three years until the next election, discussions within the party are heating up over who should carry the NPP flag. While Bawumia enjoys significant backing, another faction is rooting for Ken Agyapong, the sharp-witted businessman and former Assin Central MP, arguing he’s the key to unseating the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The debate underscores a pivotal moment for the NPP as it regroups and strategizes to reclaim power. Safo’s endorsement adds a compelling voice to the conversation, framing Bawumia’s 2024 defeat not as a final verdict, but as a stepping stone to future success. As the party weighs its options, the coming years promise a fierce contest for leadership—and a test of resilience for its hopefuls.
