A heated legal showdown between Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and outspoken politician Kennedy Agyapong has entered a fresh chapter, sparking debate over a recent U.S. court decision. Agyapong’s legal team has brushed off Anas’ excitement about the ruling as hasty and unfounded, insisting the battle is far from over.
The latest twist unfolded in New Jersey’s Essex County Superior Court, where Anas won an $18 million defamation award against Agyapong. The court held the politician accountable for tarnishing the journalist’s reputation. Anas hailed the verdict as a triumph for justice, emphasizing that it sends a clear message: influential figures can’t target journalists without facing repercussions. “This is a win for truth and democracy,” he declared shortly after the ruling.
But Agyapong’s camp sees things differently. Kwaku Amoh Darteh, one of the politician’s attorneys, took to Class FM to challenge Anas’ victory lap. “It’s absurd to celebrate now,” he said, pointing out that the case hasn’t reached its final stage. According to Darteh, the absence of a conclusive judgment means no award can be officially recognized. “A motion for a mistrial is on the table, and the judge will rule in 30 days. Legally speaking, there’s no finality here,” he explained.
Darteh also painted Agyapong as unruffled by the situation, describing him as confident and composed. He called on the public to hold off on forming opinions until the court delivers its ultimate decision, cautioning against premature conclusions.
The dispute adds another layer to a saga that’s already seen its share of drama. Anas drew a sharp contrast between this U.S. outcome and his experience in Ghana, where a similar defamation suit against Agyapong faltered. He noted that despite the politician admitting in 2018 to lacking evidence for his claims, a Ghanaian court tossed out the case—a decision that still stings for the journalist.
As the legal gears continue to turn, this high-stakes clash remains unresolved. With both sides digging in, the final chapter of this defamation saga promises to keep onlookers on edge, waiting to see who will emerge victorious.
