Ghana’s National Apprenticeship Programme to Boost Youth Employment

The National Youth Authority (NYA) has been entrusted with the implementation of the National Apprenticeship Programme, an initiative designed to equip young Ghanaians with practical skills for employment. Launched on March 19, 2025, by Youth Development and Empowerment Minister George Opare Addo, the programme is part of the government’s broader strategy to combat youth unemployment through vocational training. A Technical Working Committee, chaired by NYA CEO Osman Ayariga, has been established to oversee the initiative’s execution. Ayariga expressed his dedication to ensuring the programme’s success, highlighting its potential to provide young people with valuable skills that can lead to sustainable jobs.

Minister Opare Addo emphasized the programme’s role in bridging the gap between formal education and employment by offering hands-on training in various trades. The initiative will be executed in collaboration with industry experts, vocational training institutions, and relevant government agencies to ensure that participants gain practical experience in their chosen fields. The government has pledged adequate resources to facilitate the programme’s smooth operation, ensuring that thousands of Ghanaian youths benefit from skill development opportunities. By fostering partnerships with key stakeholders, the initiative aims to create a strong foundation for long-term economic growth through vocational education.

As part of its commitment to addressing youth unemployment, the government is actively working to enhance the impact of the National Apprenticeship Programme. The initiative is expected to empower young people by making them self-reliant and capable of contributing to the country’s economic development. By equipping participants with relevant skills, the programme not only increases employment opportunities but also fosters entrepreneurship among Ghanaian youth. With strong backing from government agencies, industry leaders, and vocational training institutions, the initiative stands as a crucial step toward reducing unemployment and creating a workforce prepared for the demands of the job market.
