ADWOA SAFO EXPOSES CORRUPTION IN SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAMME, CLAIMS AKUFO-ADDO ABANDONED HER

In a stunning revelation, Adwoa Safo, former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, has accused ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo of tasking her with a critical audit of the School Feeding Programme, only to distance himself when her findings exposed widespread corruption. The allegations, shared in a candid interview, paint a troubling picture of political interference and betrayal within Ghana’s government.

Safo disclosed that shortly after her appointment as Gender Minister, Akufo-Addo personally instructed her to scrutinize the programme’s finances with urgency—before she even received operational funds for her ministry. “He approached me right after I took office,” she said. “The former president wanted a clear picture of how the programme’s money was being spent.”

Determined to fulfill her mandate, Safo launched the investigation, but her efforts quickly met resistance. She repeatedly summoned a key figure involved in the Programme for questioning, only to be met with defiance. “I invited one of the women several times, but she never showed up,” Safo explained. “Later, she sent me a message accusing me of trying to ruin her ties within the government. I told her I was simply doing what I was asked to do.”

Undeterred by the pushback, Safo pressed on and completed the audit. Her findings, she claims, were explosive—pointing to significant corruption, particularly concentrated in the Central Region. She submitted the detailed report to Cabinet and forwarded it to the Presidency, expecting support for her diligence. Instead, she faced a shocking reversal.

“When the public started reacting to the revelations, President Akufo-Addo backed away,” Safo recounted with evident disappointment. “He denied ever directing me to conduct the audit and told me to drop it entirely. That’s when my troubles began.”

The fallout, according to Safo, marked a turning point in her political journey, straining her relationship with the administration she once served. Her account raises serious questions about accountability and transparency in the handling of public funds meant to nourish Ghana’s schoolchildren.

As the nation digests these claims, Safo’s story shines a harsh light on the challenges of confronting corruption within the corridors of power—and the personal cost of standing firm in the face of pressure.
