In a fresh twist to the post-election drama in Dome Kwabenya, defeated parliamentary aspirant Mike Oquaye Jnr has come out swinging against accusations leveled by former MP Sarah Adwoa Safo. She alleged that during his campaign, Oquaye Jnr took cheap shots at her father, Apostle Kwadwo Safo, a respected figure known for his farming roots. Oquaye Jnr, however, isn’t having it, calling the claims baseless and a misrepresentation of his character.
“I’d never dream of insulting anyone’s father,” Oquaye Jnr said in a fiery rebuttal. “My own grandfather worked the land as a farmer, and I’ve followed in his footsteps part-time. Respect runs deep in me—it’s how I was raised.” He dismissed the notion that he’d mock Apostle Safo’s background, insisting he never played the family comparison card to win votes.
The controversy stems from comments Adwoa Safo made on Movement TV, where she suggested Oquaye Jnr had painted his father, a professor, as superior to hers, a farmer, to sway the electorate. She cautioned that such remarks wouldn’t sit well with her father’s loyal church followers. Oquaye Jnr, however, insists he never stooped to such tactics, sticking to a campaign built on principles, not personal jabs.
Beyond the Family Feud: Respect and Reconciliation
The accusations didn’t stop at family ties. Oquaye Jnr also tackled rumors that he’d snubbed high-profile figures like the former President and Chief of Staff during his run. “I’m a private man who honors elders,” he said. “Ignoring a call from someone like that? That’s not me. Respect isn’t optional in my book.”
With the primaries now in the rearview mirror, Oquaye Jnr opened up about his efforts to mend fences with his rivals. He revealed a mixed bag of responses: Madam Sheela, one of his opponents, welcomed his outreach, and the two still keep in touch. Another contender, however, gave him the cold shoulder. “I tried three times to connect after the primaries,” he shared. “Her assistant, Nana Dubin, finally told me after weeks of effort that she wasn’t interested in talking.”
Staying Steady in the Storm
As the dust settles, Oquaye Jnr is keeping his cool, pledging loyalty to the party despite the swirling allegations. “I won’t drag the party’s name through the mud or point fingers,” he said. “I’m sitting tight, waiting to see what the next move is.” His measured tone underscores a resolve to rise above the fray while the party charts its course forward.
This unfolding saga lays bare the messy undercurrents of political rivalries and the delicate dance of unity after a bruising contest. For Oquaye Jnr, it’s a test of character—one he’s determined to pass with dignity intact.
