On March 20, 2025, President Donald Trump signed a groundbreaking executive order aimed at significantly dismantling the U.S. Department of Education, fulfilling a key campaign promise to reduce federal oversight and return education authority to the states. The order, signed in a White House ceremony surrounded by schoolchildren and state governors, directs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to take “all necessary steps” to diminish the agency’s functions, effectively gutting its operational capacity while preserving certain critical programs.

The Department of Education, established in 1979, has long been a target of conservative criticism for what Trump calls “federal overreach” and “liberal indoctrination.” The executive order instructs McMahon to minimize the agency’s footprint, slashing staff and redistributing responsibilities like student loans and grants for low-income students to other federal departments. While complete closure requires congressional approval—a challenging prospect given the need for 60 Senate votes—Trump’s action signals a bold intent to reshape the education landscape.
In recent weeks, the administration has already reduced the department’s workforce by nearly 50%, dropping from 4,133 employees to approximately 2,183. Critics, including Democratic leaders and teachers’ unions, warn that these cuts jeopardize vital programs, such as Title I funding for high-poverty schools and IDEA support for students with disabilities. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the move “reckless,” predicting larger class sizes, teacher layoffs, and weakened civil rights enforcement.
Supporters, however, cheer the shift as a victory for state autonomy. Trump, speaking at the signing event, emphasized poor national test scores despite high per-pupil spending, arguing, “We’re going to shut it down as quickly as possible—it’s doing us no good.” Governors like Ron DeSantis of Florida, present at the ceremony, echoed this sentiment, praising the return of local control.
Legal challenges are expected, as the department’s core functions are mandated by Congress. Education experts question how dismantled operations will maintain student aid and civil rights protections without legislative backing. For now, Trump’s order sets the stage for a contentious battle, testing the limits of executive power and igniting a national debate over the future of American education.
