The Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has launched an aggressive campaign against illegal mining, commonly known as "galamsey," citing it as a grave threat to both national security and the environment. Speaking at the Regional Police Commanders’ Conference, he underscored the urgent need to intensify efforts to curb these unlawful activities, particularly in the Western North region, where galamsey operations have been escalating. According to the IGP, armed criminals involved in illegal mining have been attacking civilians, including forest guards, with alarming brutality, creating a climate of fear and lawlessness. He emphasized that such acts of violence must not continue unchecked, calling on all regional commanders to take decisive measures to arrest and prosecute offenders. By declaring an all-out war on illegal mining, the police administration aims to restore law and order while safeguarding the country’s natural resources from further destruction.

This announcement comes amid growing concerns about the devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana’s forests, water bodies, and local communities. Over the years, illegal mining has caused widespread environmental degradation, contaminating rivers with mercury and other harmful chemicals while depleting fertile lands. The government has made several attempts to combat galamsey, including military interventions and the introduction of community mining initiatives, but the problem persists due to corruption, political interference, and the high financial gains associated with the activity. The IGP’s declaration signals a renewed commitment to tackling this issue at its roots, with law enforcement agencies expected to take a more aggressive approach. He further assured the public that the police force would not tolerate any resistance from illegal miners and their armed associates, stressing that those caught engaging in such acts would face severe legal consequences.

The broader implications of this crackdown extend beyond environmental protection to national security and economic stability. Illegal mining has often been linked to organized crime, money laundering, and even violent conflicts over land and resources, making it a pressing concern for law enforcement. Additionally, the destruction of farmlands and water bodies threatens food security and public health, affecting countless communities that rely on these natural resources. While the IGP’s strong stance against galamsey has been welcomed by many, it remains to be seen how effectively the police can enforce this directive, given past challenges. Stakeholders, including the government, civil society, and traditional leaders, must collaborate to ensure that this campaign leads to lasting solutions rather than temporary interventions. Public awareness, stricter regulations, and alternative livelihood programs for affected miners will be crucial in addressing the root causes of illegal mining and ensuring sustainable development for future generations.
