The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) have welcomed the recent arrest of Daniel Owuusu Koranteng, also known as Amakye, in connection with the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale. Koranteng was taken into custody on March 19 and has been remanded by the Madina District Court, with his next hearing set for April 1. This development represents a significant milestone in the prolonged investigation into Suale’s assassination, which shocked the global media community. Suale was shot and killed by unidentified individuals on a motorbike in Accra’s Madina neighborhood in January 2019. His work, which exposed corruption within Ghanaian football, had earned him both national and international recognition. The GJA, in a statement released on March 20, expressed optimism that this arrest marks the beginning of a long-overdue justice process. The association reiterated its commitment to closely following the case and engaging with authorities to ensure justice is served.
In addition to seeking justice for Suale, the GJA remains focused on broader issues affecting press freedom in Ghana. The association is actively involved in addressing cases of violence against journalists, including the assault on Latif Iddrisu, which has been brought before the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice. The GJA has consistently advocated for media safety and the protection of journalists from threats and violence. Anthony Bellanger, the General Secretary of the IFJ, emphasized the importance of this arrest in the fight against impunity for crimes against journalists. He urged Ghanaian authorities to continue their investigations until all those responsible for Suale’s murder are prosecuted. The IFJ and GJA have long been vocal about the dangers journalists face in Ghana and across the world, calling on governments to ensure press freedom is upheld and that perpetrators of violence against journalists face legal consequences.
As investigations progress, the IFJ and GJA reaffirm their dedication to securing justice for Suale and other journalists who have faced threats and attacks. The arrest of Koranteng is seen as a crucial step, but both organizations stress that it should be the first of many in ensuring that all those involved in Suale’s murder are held accountable. Beyond this case, the GJA continues to push for policies that protect journalists and promote a safe working environment for the media. The association has been actively engaging with authorities and international organizations to address ongoing threats against press freedom in Ghana. This arrest sends a strong message that crimes against journalists will not go unpunished and that there is hope for justice, not just for Suale but for all journalists who risk their lives to expose corruption and wrongdoing.
