Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, has openly criticized the recent National Security operation at the home of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison. He questioned the leadership of Richard Jakpa, who headed the raid, and expressed concerns over the way it was carried out. Speaking on Channel One TV on March 22, Cudjoe stated that if there were any infractions committed by politicians, they should be addressed in a more appropriate and lawful manner. He argued that Jakpa’s involvement in the operation was inappropriate and reflected poorly on the credibility of the National Security service. He further advised President Nana Akufo-Addo to reconsider Jakpa’s role in leading such operations, as it could damage public trust in security agencies.

The raid, which occurred on March 19 at Dr. Addison’s residence in Roman Ridge, Accra, involved about 20 operatives, some of whom were masked and heavily armed with AK-47 rifles. Reports indicate that upon arrival, the team disabled the property’s CCTV system before proceeding with the search. Cudjoe strongly condemned the aggressive nature of the operation, arguing that it tarnishes the reputation of National Security and raises serious questions about due process. He emphasized that while law enforcement has the right to investigate individuals, such operations should be conducted in a more professional and transparent manner to uphold democratic principles. He also suggested that the forceful entry and handling of the search could be seen as intimidation rather than a genuine attempt at uncovering wrongdoing.

Cudjoe’s remarks add to the growing concerns regarding the actions of Ghana’s National Security in handling politically sensitive cases. He called for a thorough review of law enforcement practices, stressing that transparency is crucial in maintaining public confidence in security operations. Furthermore, he urged the government to ensure that all security personnel act within the bounds of the law to avoid political persecution or unnecessary aggression. His criticism comes at a time when the country is experiencing heightened political tensions, with opposition figures and civil society organizations closely monitoring the conduct of state institutions. As the debate over National Security’s approach continues, Cudjoe’s call for professionalism and fairness highlights the need for reforms in Ghana’s security framework.
