Manchester United have officially confirmed the departure of Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelöf, and Jonny Evans after their contracts expired at the end of the 2024/25 season. The trio leaves Old Trafford as free agents, marking the end of their respective chapters at the club. While Lindelöf’s exit was somewhat anticipated amid injuries and squad rotation, the departures of Eriksen and Evans also underline a potential squad overhaul as United prepare for the upcoming season under new leadership.
Christian Eriksen joined Manchester United on a free transfer in July 2022 after a remarkable comeback to football following his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020. The Danish playmaker was seen as a smart acquisition by Erik ten Hag due to his experience, vision, and composure on the ball.
Over two seasons at United, Eriksen made 72 appearances across all competitions. He scored 4 goals and provided 12 assists, primarily operating in a deep-lying playmaker role. In his debut season (2022/23), Eriksen was instrumental in orchestrating United’s midfield, linking up effectively with Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. His composure and range of passing were key in United’s possession-based style.
Eriksen helped the team secure the Carabao Cup in 2023, playing a vital part in their cup run. Despite some injury setbacks, particularly an ankle injury in early 2023, he remained a crucial squad player. However, with the emergence of younger midfielders like Kobbie Mainoo and the shift toward a more dynamic style of play, Eriksen’s influence waned in the 2024/25 campaign, where he was limited to just 18 appearances, most from the bench.
Eriksen leaves Manchester United as a respected figure who brought professionalism, class, and calmness to the midfield during a transitional period for the club.
Jonny Evans’ return to Manchester United in 2023 was one of the more unexpected moves of the decade. Having initially left the club in 2015 after rising through the academy and winning multiple trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson, Evans came back as a short-term signing to provide defensive cover.
Despite being 35 at the time of his return, Evans quickly became a dependable presence in a shaky defensive line plagued by injuries. In the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons, he made 29 appearances for United across all competitions. His calm defending, aerial ability, and experience were invaluable during stretches when first-choice defenders were unavailable.
Evans brought leadership both on and off the pitch, and while he wasn’t a long-term solution, his return helped stabilise the squad during a turbulent season that included injuries to Raphael Varane and Lisandro MartÃnez. His final appearance came in a 2–1 win over Aston Villa in April 2025, where he received a warm ovation from fans appreciative of his professionalism and commitment.
Across both spells at United, Evans made 198 appearances, winning three Premier League titles, two League Cups, and a FIFA Club World Cup.
The departures of Eriksen, Lindelöf, and Evans symbolize a new era dawning at Manchester United. As the club looks to reshape the squad with fresh legs and younger talent, these experienced players leave behind lasting impressions of professionalism and dedication. United fans will wish them well in their next chapters, while the club turns the page in pursuit of a brighter, more competitive future.
