The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider the renaming of Tamale International Airport, suggesting it be renamed Gbewaa International Airport. This request follows a prior decision to rename the airport to Yakubu Tali International Airport before the 2024 general elections, a move that, according to the Dagbon leader, was made without his consent. In a speech delivered on his behalf by Zangbalin Lana, Dr. Yakubu Mahama, during President Mahama’s thank-you tour of the Northern Region on March 22, Yaa Naa emphasized that after consultations with the Nayiri and the Bimbilla Naa, they unanimously agreed on renaming the airport to reflect the cultural heritage of the Dagbon people. The leader’s request highlights the importance of respecting traditional leadership and ensuring that such critical decisions are made with proper consultation.

Beyond the renaming of the airport, the Yaa Naa also urged the government to expedite the commencement of Phase Three of the Tamale International Airport project. The expansion, which has been stalled since the completion of Phase Two, is considered essential in meeting the region’s growing aviation needs. He stressed that further development of the airport would enhance economic activities and improve connectivity, making it a key transportation hub for Northern Ghana and beyond. The Dagbon Overlord’s call aligns with broader concerns about infrastructural development in the region, emphasizing the need for continued government investment in projects that drive socio-economic progress. By prioritizing the next phase of the airport, the government can ensure that the facility serves its intended purpose of promoting trade, tourism, and regional development.

In addition to the airport project, Yaa Naa Abukari II called on the government to revive and complete stalled E-Block projects in the region, which are essential for improving educational infrastructure. The E-Block initiative, introduced to enhance access to secondary education, has faced delays in implementation, leaving many communities without the necessary facilities for quality learning. The Overlord’s request underscores the pressing need for improved education opportunities in the Northern Region, ensuring that young people have access to well-equipped schools. His appeal reflects the broader concerns of many Ghanaians who believe that sustained investment in education and infrastructure is crucial for national development. As the government considers these requests, stakeholders will be keen to see how authorities respond to these critical issues affecting the Northern Region.
