President John Dramani Mahama has assured the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, that his administration will prioritize resolving the persistent water crisis in Yendi and its neighboring communities. Speaking during a visit to the Gbewaa Palace as part of his post-election "Thank You Tour," Mahama emphasized his commitment to tackling water shortages across the Northern Region. He pledged to find lasting solutions not only for Yendi but also for Tamale, with a target to resolve Tamale’s water issues by the end of his four-year term. The president’s visit was met with enthusiasm, as large crowds gathered to welcome him and show their support. Alongside his promise to improve access to clean water, Mahama outlined plans to provide economic opportunities for the youth through employment and skills development programs, emphasizing that his government is focused on long-term development rather than temporary fixes.

Beyond addressing the water crisis, Mahama also highlighted key infrastructure projects aimed at boosting the region’s economy and connectivity. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing the Eastern Corridor Road, a crucial transportation route linking Yendi to Accra, which would enhance trade and facilitate the movement of goods and people between the north and the south. Additionally, he promised to strengthen electricity supply to the region to support businesses and households. Mahama further revealed plans to invest in afforestation projects as part of broader environmental sustainability efforts, recognizing the adverse effects of deforestation on the local ecosystem. The former president’s speech underscored his vision for the Northern Region as a hub for development, urging the people of Dagbon to continue supporting his government as it implements these transformative policies.

In response, Ya-Na Abukari II, speaking through an elder, expressed deep concern over the impact of the ongoing water shortage on the daily lives of the people in Yendi. He urged the president to prioritize access to potable water, as the lack of it has significantly affected residents' health and overall well-being. The traditional leader also called for increased efforts toward job creation to address the growing number of unemployed youth in the region. His appeal aligned with Mahama’s broader agenda of regional development and economic empowerment. Mahama, in turn, reassured the Ya-Na and his people that his government remains committed to development initiatives that will uplift the Northern Region. He also expressed gratitude to the people of Yendi for their unwavering support during his campaign, promising to deliver on his pledges and ensure that the region sees tangible improvements in infrastructure, economic growth, and access to essential services.
