Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede accused the United States on Monday of interfering in the territory’s political affairs following the announcement of an American delegation's visit this week. The delegation, which will include National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, is set to travel to the Danish territory, which former US President Donald Trump had previously shown interest in acquiring.
The White House revealed on Sunday that Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, will visit Greenland this week with her son and a US delegation. Egede responded by emphasizing that Greenland’s sovereignty and democratic process must be respected, noting that the visit, scheduled from Thursday to Saturday, cannot be dismissed as a mere private visit.
Since reclaiming power in January, Trump has repeatedly stated his desire for the US to acquire Greenland, even suggesting the possibility of using force to make that happen.
Egede further pointed out that Washington had been informed there would be "no talks" on the matter until a new Greenlandic government was formed, following the March 11 elections that saw Egede leading a caretaker government.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, leader of the centre-right Democrats, who is likely to become the next prime minister of Greenland, has also condemned Trump’s actions regarding the territory as "inappropriate."
“We must stand united and resist unacceptable treatment because we are the ones who will determine our future,” Egede stated.
Greenland, which seeks greater independence from Denmark, is home to vast untapped mineral and oil reserves, though oil and uranium exploration are currently banned.
Polls show that while most Greenlanders support independence from Denmark, they do not favour being annexed by the United States.
Trump's son, Donald Jr., also visited Greenland for several hours in early January.

The shutdown, which lasted for most of the day, disrupted travel for thousands of passengers worldwide and sparked concerns about the reliability of vital UK infrastructure. Read more here.
