Seidu Agongo, a renowned businessman and philanthropist, has proposed a series of measures to boost Ghana's agricultural sector and reduce the country's staggering $3.5 billion food import bill. Ghana, despite being home to some of the world's most fertile lands, spends billions of dollars annually on food imports, which not only drains the country's foreign exchange but also hinders the growth of local farmers ¹.

To address this challenge, Agongo emphasizes the need for a multifaceted approach that involves both short-term and long-term strategies. Here are some of the key solutions he outlines:

Short-term Solutions

- Increase Investment in Irrigation: Expanding irrigation infrastructure will enable farmers to produce crops throughout the year, increasing agricultural productivity and reducing reliance on imports.

- Mechanization and Modernization: Introducing modern farming techniques and machinery will enhance efficiency, reduce labor costs, and improve crop yields.

- Improved Seed Varieties: Developing and promoting high-yielding, disease-resistant seed varieties will boost crop production and reduce post-harvest losses.

Long-term Solutions

- Value-added Food Processing: Investing in agro-processing infrastructure will enable Ghana to add value to its locally produced crops, reducing reliance on imported processed foods.

- Livestock and Meat Processing: Developing the livestock industry and establishing meat processing plants will help reduce Ghana's meat import bill.

- Youth Participation in Agriculture: Encouraging youth participation in agriculture through training programs, financial support, and modern technology will help revitalize the sector and ensure its sustainability.

Policy Interventions

- Leave Agriculture to Professionals: Agongo stresses the need for policy interventions to be led by professionals with expertise in agriculture, rather than being driven by political considerations.

- Sustained Support for Farmers: Providing sustained support for farmers, including access to credit facilities, subsidized farm inputs, and extension services, will help build their capacity and improve productivity.

By implementing these solutions, Agongo believes that Ghana can transform its agricultural sector, reduce its reliance on food imports, and achieve food self-sufficiency. This, in turn, will help save foreign exchange, create jobs, and ensure food security for the nation
