A question for you—do a quick check in the mirror. Have you ever been asked if you've got a pair of dimples above your bum? "Back dimples" is also the name given to them. If so, that's great news because those indentations are apparently signs of good health and more powerful climaxes.

To that, we ask you to be patient. Back dimples are also called "Venus Dimples," named after Venus, the Roman goddess of beauty.

Why? It has been theorized that the dimples help the climax by providing more blood to the pelvic area.

We interviewed two professionals to hear their take on the science behind this reported sexual relationship and if there is any truth to this gossip. Continue reading to hear from a sex and relationship therapist, Kate Moyle, and a chemist, Pareena Patel, about back dimples, their meaning, their origins, and if they make climaxes better.

Back Dimples Mean What?

Dimples in the lower back are real indentations at the point where the pelvis and spine meet, says Lloyds Pharmacy chemist Pareena Patel. She goes on to say, "They occur due to the ligament that connects your skin to your superior iliac spine."

Scientifically, what does that mean? "Relatively little research has been done to determine why they exist and what they are for," Pareena says. Studies on the "attractiveness" of the "Dimples of Venus" in America and Turkey found that men rated the woman with these dimples as more attractive.

But evidence and research go no further than that. Dimples are impressions above joints, although there is now no definitive scientific research to show that they are of any medical use apart from that.

A "sacral dimple," or a tiny dimple at the tip of the spine, is not the same as dimples on the back. Pareena warns that extensive scarring in this area "should be treated very differently if it is present in premature newborns" because sometimes it means there are issues with the lumbar region of the spinal cord.

What Caused Your Dimpled Back?

Birth dimples on the back are a natural part of the human anatomy. There is some indication of a strong genetic influence, Pareena contributes.

Do your back dimples "reappear" if you start exercising? Brief answer: no. Because there are no muscles to be developed, this happens. There are, however, a few peculiar situations in which weight loss can cause your back dimples to be more noticeable.

What's the Link Between Orgasms and Back Dimples?

Why are people with rear dimples more sexually active?

According to the study conducted by Canesten and Brook, 59% of young women would have liked to have learned about orgasms at school.

So we decided to go out and ask Kate Moyle if having dimples on your back makes for a better orgasmic experience or not.

Kate warns, "Be careful what you take as truth. Dimples on the back used to be seen as a sign of good circulation, thus where the myth begins.

There is no evidence that being capable of producing dimples on your back can aid in better orgasms or circulation, though healthy functioning of circulation can assist in increasing the flow of blood to your vagina and vulva when stimulated, thus aiding in contributing to an orgasm."
