Security agencies have arrested three suspects in connection with the alarming spate of Mobile Money (MoMo) vendor murders in the Ashanti Region. The arrests, part of a meticulously coordinated operation between the National Security agency and the Ghana Police Service, took place in Bawku and Accra. This information was shared on Monday (24 March) in a statement released by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene. While authorities have yet to disclose the identities of the suspects, police sources confirmed to Asaase News that these individuals are currently assisting with ongoing investigations.
The rising crime wave has sparked significant public concern, particularly following a series of armed robberies targeting MoMo vendors in various locations across the region. The recent incidents have seen criminals making off with not only cash but also personal valuables, instilling a sense of fear among both vendors and customers. For instance, in a tragic event last month, a 27-year-old MoMo vendor, Patricia Nimako, was shot dead in Krofrom, with her attackers fleeing the scene with GH¢10,000 and multiple mobile phones. Additionally, another vendor fell prey to similar circumstances at Amansie Asaman, highlighting the urgent need for intervention. Another case involves the murder of a 27-year-old vendor at Soldier-Line in the Kwadaso Municipality, further deepening concerns over safety.
In light of these incidents, the police have ramped up operations in identified crime hotspots to effectively curb the rise in MoMo-related robberies. Dr. Amoakohene praised the swift response from security forces in identifying and apprehending the suspects and assured residents that further investigations are underway. He emphasized the importance of vigilance among MoMo operators, encouraging them to adopt safety measures to protect themselves from potential threats.
To enhance security for vendors, the Ashanti Regional Security Council (AREGSEC) plans to host a safety workshop aimed at educating MoMo operators on various precautionary measures for their businesses. Dr. Amoakohene also took to Facebook to reaffirm the government's commitment to tackling this pressing issue and restoring confidence in the mobile money trade, urging residents and business owners to report any suspicious activity to the police as efforts to bring perpetrators to justice continue.
