Oral Health Experts Urge Ghanaians to Avoid Using Teeth as Tools
The Oral Health Professionals Association of Ghana (OHPAG) has emphasized the importance of oral hygiene and warned against harmful dental habits, including using teeth to open bottles or crack hard objects. In a statement marking World Oral Health Day on March 20, 2025, the association called on Ghanaians to prioritize dental care under the theme “A Happy Mouth… is a Happy Mind.” OHPAG President Shaibu Issifu outlined key oral health practices such as brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, reducing sugar intake, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, and visiting the dentist at least twice a year. The statement also urged parents to instill these habits in their children to promote lifelong oral health.
Beyond personal responsibility, OHPAG called on the government to enhance access to quality oral healthcare in line with Sustainable Development Goal 3.8. The association urged policymakers to expedite financial clearances and postings for oral health professionals, expand training for dental laboratory technicians, and develop a comprehensive national oral health policy. Additionally, OHPAG stressed the need for Ghana to align with global oral health strategies set by the World Health Assembly, ensuring that oral healthcare services are equitable and widely accessible. According to Issifu, poor oral health significantly impacts citizens' self-esteem and mental health, making government intervention crucial for public well-being.
The association’s advocacy highlights the broader need for structured oral healthcare policies and public awareness campaigns to prevent avoidable dental problems. Ghanaians were encouraged to take proactive measures in their oral hygiene routines while supporting efforts to strengthen the country’s dental care system. With increased education and better healthcare infrastructure, Ghana can reduce oral diseases and improve overall health outcomes. OHPAG’s campaign reinforces the message that oral health is not just about maintaining a bright smile but also about ensuring long-term well-being and confidence.
