NPA Seeks Security Reinforcement for 24-Hour Fuel Stations

The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, has announced efforts to collaborate with security agencies to ensure the safety of consumers and workers at fuel stations nationwide. This initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to implement a 24-hour economy in the petroleum sector. Speaking at a meeting with the Eastern Regional Minister, security heads, and other stakeholders in Koforidua, Mr. Tameklo emphasized the need for stricter regulations to protect the petroleum industry from crimes such as fuel smuggling, illegal siphoning, and fraud. He stressed the importance of active involvement from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), the NPA’s intelligence unit, the Police, Customs, and the Fire Service to prevent criminal activities within the sector.

To strengthen security, the NPA is planning specialized training programs for law enforcement personnel to enhance their ability to handle petroleum-related crimes. Mr. Tameklo pointed out that fuel stations, particularly those operating at night, are vulnerable to criminal attacks, making security reinforcement crucial. He noted that the success of the government’s 24-hour economy policy depends on ensuring the safety of petroleum workers and consumers. A recent armed robbery attempt at a Total fuel station in Sekondi-Takoradi further underscored the urgent need for heightened security measures. The robbers, who targeted the station at dawn, were unable to access the safe due to the manager's absence, highlighting the risks faced by fuel stations operating late hours.

Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey has pledged her support for the NPA’s initiative, urging closer collaboration between the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the NPA. She suggested integrating REGSEC into fuel station security operations across all regions to ensure a coordinated approach. The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening security partnerships and enforcing safety measures in the petroleum industry. As the 24-hour economy plan unfolds, the NPA and security agencies aim to maintain strict compliance with regulations to safeguard both businesses and consumers.
