In a bold move to revitalize the national football team, Ghana’s Minister for Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, has announced that members of the newly formed Black Stars Management Committee are volunteering their services without financial compensation. The decision comes as the country seeks to rebound from the disappointment of missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and gears up for critical 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The previous committee, led by Mark Addo, was dissolved following the Black Stars’ failure to secure a spot in next year’s AFCON. In its place, a fresh leadership team has been appointed, headed by seasoned football administrator Dr. Randy Abbey as Chairman, with former national team captain Stephen Appiah serving as Vice Chairman and Player Relations lead. The committee also includes Samuel Aboabire and Moses Armah, tasked with matchday operations, and Richard Nsenkyire, assigned to special duties.

Addressing questions about compensation during an interview with Asempa FM, Minister Adams clarified that the government is not paying salaries or allowances to committee members. However, he hinted at potential rewards contingent on the team’s success in securing a World Cup berth.

“For now, they are not being paid,” Adams stated. “But if we qualify for the World Cup, the government will decide on an appropriate reward for their efforts.” He emphasized that the only state support provided is covering basic necessities, such as accommodation and meals. “Their work is sacrificial,” he added. “They’re committed to ensuring the Black Stars regain their competitive edge.”

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among fans, with some praising the committee’s dedication and others questioning the sustainability of unpaid roles in high-pressure sporting environments. The Black Stars, meanwhile, face immediate challenges with World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar in March 2024, matches that will test both the team’s resolve and the new management’s strategic vision.

As Ghana rallies behind its revamped leadership, the focus remains on redemption—and whether this gamble on goodwill can propel the nation back to football’s global stage.
