Hanks Anuku Opens Up on Industry Blackmail and Career Setbacks

Veteran Nollywood actor Hanks Anuku has spoken out about the struggles he faced in the Nigerian movie industry, revealing that jealousy and blackmail from his colleagues significantly impacted his career. In an interview on the Nollywood Hardcore podcast with Emma Labista, Anuku shared that some industry insiders, envious of his success, allegedly spread false rumors to damage his reputation. He claimed that misleading images from movie sets were used to suggest he was mentally unstable, leading to a decline in job offers and creating major setbacks in his career.

Feeling frustrated by the situation, Anuku decided to leave Nigeria and relocate to Ghana, where he pursued new opportunities in the creative arts sector. He was actively involved during President Akufo-Addo’s administration, following his support for the president’s campaign. The actor criticized the Nollywood industry, describing it as lacking growth and openness. According to him, many actors and filmmakers refuse to embrace versatility, which stifles creativity and hinders the industry's overall progress. He accused some industry members of hypocrisy, saying they fail to learn and evolve, making it difficult for Nollywood to reach its full potential on the global stage.

Frustrated by these challenges, Anuku relocated to Ghana, where he found opportunities within the creative arts sector during President Akufo-Addo’s tenure, following his support for the president’s campaign. He criticized Nollywood for lacking openness and failing to evolve with global industry trends. According to him, many actors and filmmakers in Nigeria resist change and refuse to embrace versatility, limiting their creativity and hindering the industry's growth. He described the industry as being filled with hypocrisy, where rather than supporting each other, professionals often engage in unhealthy competition and sabotage, which ultimately slows down progress.

Despite these setbacks, Anuku remains a respected figure in Nollywood, known for his memorable performances in action and crime movies. His revelations have sparked renewed discussions about the challenges actors face behind the scenes, including professional jealousy, career suppression, and the need for stronger industry support. While he acknowledges the struggles that have affected his career, he remains passionate about acting and storytelling. His resilience and dedication continue to inspire fans, who celebrate his contributions to African cinema. Anuku’s story serves as a reminder of the obstacles actors endure in maintaining their careers amid the complexities of the entertainment industry.
