Jide Kosoko Speaks on Fame, Wealth, and Nollywood’s Challenges

Veteran Nollywood actor Jide Kosoko has opened up about the financial struggles he has faced despite a long and successful career in the film industry. Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, the 71-year-old actor admitted that while he is financially stable, he does not consider himself rich by Nigerian standards. He expressed gratitude for being able to afford three square meals daily but emphasized that fame has not necessarily brought him great wealth. His statement highlights the financial reality many actors face, where public perception often contrasts with their actual financial situation.

Kosoko also addressed the persistent issue of piracy in Nollywood, blaming weak copyright laws for the industry's financial losses. He explained that film piracy has significantly affected actors and filmmakers, making it difficult for them to earn what they deserve. According to him, current fines are not strict enough to discourage offenders, as those making millions from piracy can easily afford to pay. He suggested that a 20-year jail sentence without an option of a fine would serve as a stronger deterrent. The veteran actor stressed that until the government enforces stricter penalties, Nollywood will continue to struggle with financial instability.

Having started his career in 1964 as a child actor in Makanjuola, Kosoko remains an iconic figure in Nollywood. Over the decades, he has witnessed the industry’s evolution from its humble beginnings to its current global recognition. However, he noted that many actors still struggle financially due to inadequate earnings and the exploitation of their work. His reflections serve as a wake-up call for upcoming actors, urging them to plan financially and advocate for better industry policies. Despite the challenges, Kosoko remains passionate about acting and continues to push for reforms that will secure a more sustainable future for Nollywood professionals.
