Nigerian actor Segun Arinze has raised significant concerns over the declining originality of the country's film industry, Nollywood. As a seasoned professional with years of experience, Arinze has a unique perspective on the changes that have unfolded in the industry over the years. He argues that the stories being told in recent films lack the authenticity and cultural richness that once defined Nollywood as a vibrant and dynamic cinematic landscape.
In a recent interview, Arinze bemoaned the overwhelming influx of Western culture in Nollywood productions. This trend, he believes, is contributing to the industry's seeming decline. "We are losing originality. The perception of Nollywood is changing, and the way stories are told now lacks the authenticity we once had," he expressed with a sense of urgency. He emphasized that exposure to global cinema should not come at the expense of Nigeria's cultural heritage. "Just because we have traveled abroad doesn't mean we should discard our cultural roots," he asserted.
Arinze pointedly critiques the current narrative choices made by filmmakers, suggesting that the kind of stories being told now are leading Nollywood further away from its original essence. "We don't have to abandon our traditional ways just because we have been exposed to foreign cultures," he explained, highlighting the importance of staying true to one's cultural identity.
However, amidst his critiques, Arinze also offered a note of optimism. Speaking in an interview on Accra-based JoyNews' E Corner, the veteran actor assured viewers that efforts are being made to recalibrate the industry and correct the current trend of dilution. "Even though it is slightly distorted today, we are still on track, and nothing is ever perfect," he stated, suggesting that the future of Nollywood holds promise as filmmakers work to rediscover and reclaim the authenticity that once made the industry a powerhouse in global cinema.
