Manchester United fan group The 1958 is planning a sit-in protest at the upcoming Manchester derby against Manchester City. This move comes after a joint protest with breakaway club FC United against the Glazer ownership on Saturday.
The 1958 organized a massive anti-ownership demonstration at Old Trafford 20 days ago, and they continued their fight at FC United's Broadhurst Park ground on Saturday. The event, dubbed "United United Day," marked a show of solidarity between the two groups, with The 1958 joining FC United in their stand against the Glazer ownership.
The fan-owned club and protest group linked up at the Northern Premier League Premier Division match against Stockton Town. The event featured chants, flags, and banners calling for the Glazers to leave, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the co-owner, also facing fan criticism.
Steve Crompton, spokesman for The 1958, announced plans for another sit-in protest during the Manchester derby next Sunday. The last Old Trafford sit-in occurred in August 2023, following a comeback win against Nottingham Forest.
The upcoming protest is particularly significant, as it will be United's first match since the announcement of season ticket price increases. The hikes have been met with widespread criticism, particularly from senior supporters who face significant price rises.
Chris Haymes of The 1958 group emphasized the importance of the protest, stating that the group will encourage fans to sit in their seats and stay there after the game. This move is a response to the price increases, which Haymes believes are an attempt to "price out" long-standing supporters.
The protest is expected to draw significant attention, given the high-profile nature of the Manchester derby. With millions of eyes on the match, The 1958 hopes to make a bold statement against the Glazer ownership and the recent price increases.
